Sourdough bread contains natural lactic acid, that will help keep it fresher for longer and prevent the growth of mold. However, as real sourdough has no artificial preservatives, storing it correctly will help to keep it fresher for longer.
Our loaves are sold in brown paper bags, and if you plan to eat the whole loaf within a couple of days, it will be fine left in the bag, as long as you fold over the opening to prevent air escaping. If you plan to store it for any longer, one of the alternative options below are recommended.
Natural linen or cotton drawstring bags are ideal for storing sourdough. Breathable, washable and reusable, they are also better for the environment than disposable options. Our signature logo linen bread bags are now available to purchase here. Perfectly sized for storing our sourdough loaves!
Bread boxes made from wood or stainless steel that seal well when closed are also great for storing sourdough.
Sourdough freezes very well. If only freezing for a short time, you can pop it straight into the freezer, in the brown paper bag. For a longer freeze, wrap it well in aluminium foil or pop it into a freezer bag. Once you defrost your loaf, mist it well with water and place into a hot oven for 5 or so minutes. If you freeze your bread sliced, individual slices can be defrosted covered at room temperature, toasted or even microwaved for a minute, if you prefer it soft, like it’s just been baked.
Always wait until your loaf is fully cooled before storage and do not store your sourdough in a plastic bag, or in the fridge!
